Ana Ruepp lives and works just outside of Amsterdam. Initially she studied Architecture to MA level in her native Portugal before gaining a Post Graduate Diploma (Distinction) and MA Fine Art (Distinction) at Byam Shaw School of Art, London. As well as two solo shows at the National Centre of Culture (CNC) in Lisbon, she has exhibited at The Zeitgeist Open; Candid Arts, London and Berlin; the Crypt Gallery, London and the National Society for Fine Art (SNBA) in Lisbon. She also contributed to various publications, including the illustrations for the book 'As Fadas' (Antero de Quental, Tinta da China, 2017) and a dialog on 6 paper models with the author of 'Less a building' (Michaela Nettell, Passengers, 2021).

My work doesn't try to escape or understand, much less make sense of it. It is a testimony of the senses and impressions about the current reality that surrounds me. Making objects, drawings and paintings is perhaps a unique opportunity to be in direct contact with matter in transformation, with the passing from one state to another, with that intermediate space between what it really is and what one would like it to be. By forming, I am constantly witnessing and participating in a metamorphosis that suddenly makes sense. My creative process always involves observing my surroundings, reading and recording. The recording can be varied, because there are certain activities (such as sewing, drawing, ink accumulation and paper collage, which often appear to correct and hide) that help me find a path that I don't quite know what it is and what the outcome will be. I need this process to be able to think about certain issues related to the news, what I read, what I experience, and where I live. Often, I can't say everything.
